152 — In the paint booth

We haven’t measured enough cars crossing this stage to quote a number — in practice it tends to pass between two daily checks of BMW’s feed.

What it means

The bare shell is being cleaned, corrosion-protected, primed, painted in the colour on your order, and baked. Paint is one of the most automated and tightly scheduled parts of the plant.

Like body assembly, this stage tends to flash past in the feed — many cars appear to jump from the build list straight to assembly because the earlier stages complete between two checks.

Where these numbers come from. Stage times are measured on the iX3 fleet this site tracks daily — real observed transitions, measured since 2026-08-17, not estimates. The status codes themselves are BMW-wide: every US order walks the same pipeline, so the meanings hold for any model; exact durations vary by plant and route. BMW publishes only the current status — codes occasionally step backwards when a car is re-sequenced, and that usually sorts itself out in a day or two. Not affiliated with BMW.
